240323 Shawnita Hamill Sterett’s memorial cycling celebration

Dear friend Shawnita, I go through our past riding video footage, and photos that I took, I still can't believe you are away from here, but you know you will be here with us and remembered by people who ride with you, who love with, family, and friends. hope you see how many people show up here for you.  Who is Shawnita https://spin-for-life.blogspot.com/2022/04/about-cyclist-shawnita-sterett.html  Shannon’s Poem from today’s Celebration of Life Ride honoring Shawnita…  Life is but a stopping place, A pause in what’s to be, A resting place along the road To sweet eternity. We all have different journeys, Different paths along the way, We all were meant to learn some things, But never meant to stay. Our destination is a place, Far greater than we know, For some, the journey is quicker, For some the journey’s slow. And when the journey finally ends, We’ll claim a great reward, And find an everlasting peace, Together with the Lord.  John Olivers pray   In the ...

About Cyclist: "I was diagnosed with Cancer." Angela Bautista

Three + years ago I was diagnosed with Cancer.

Yes, the big C word.

It completely turned my life upside down and I went through a really tough and challenging time, having 2 major surgeries, radiation treatments, quarantine and also a couple visits to the Emergency Room.

I had always enjoyed a very active lifestyle, but after the Cancer treatments found that it was really hard for me to get my strength back.

I gained 40+ pounds in 2 years and my energy levels were super low. I tried so many times to start exercising but it was really hard and painful, and so I ended up quitting many, many times.

When I moved to Texas last year I started seeing so many people cycling and that really got my attention. I saw a several group rides passing by where I live and day by day it intrigued me more and more until I finally had the courage to sign up for the Shawnee Trail Cycling Club.

I started out doing the Novice ride which averages 12 miles per hour and I was dying. I am a competitive person so I decided to try a faster ride, but It was just too much for me and I wasn’t able to finish it.

But, thankfully my new found friends, who very quickly became family, put together a ride for me on the same route again to help me have another chance to finish it. If it wasn’t for their support I would have given up just like I had before.

But I started building my endurance back and improved more and more day by day. I have lost 30+ pounds so far and have gotten so much stronger. I am now averaging 19-20 mph on my regular rides, although my fastest ride was 39 miles with a 21.7 mph average!

I was also very happy to complete my first Century ride in October of 2021, finishing it at 18.9 mph, although I felt like I could’ve gone even faster.

I recently participated in my first FAST ride and while I struggled a bit, I was able to finish with the group. My goal this year is to continue to get stronger, do more FAST rides, and complete at least 6 Centuries.
